If so, what do I need in my computer by way of both hardware and software?

As taurarian advised, that is a good site for basics. The normal setup
options are at -

A couple of tips.
Does your pickup have a ceramic or magnetic cartridge?
If ceramic, you can probably feed it straight into your soundcard, as it has
a high output level.
If magnetic, you will need the pre-amp box. I picked one up (switchable Line
or Amp) for around $AU25.00.

Depending as to which soundcard software you have, it's possible that it
already has a recorder available there.
I'm using Creative and use their recorder for vinyl & cassette copying (the
latter doesn't usually need the pre-amp box as a cassette-deck has a high
enough output).

I also use either Nero Wave editor or Goldwave 5.04 (
http://www.goldwave.com/ ) for editing and cleaning up.

(To reply direct, please ensure address ends with .au)
