View Full Version : Dual boot change - have questions
Mark Godfrey
December 6th 03, 01:38 PM
Currently this is how my system is set up. 120gig data with no OS's; 40gig
with 98se which is known as the C: drive; and a 20gig that has XP Pro
installed on it.
My situation is that I no longer want to have a dual boot and just want to
continue using XP Pro. I have everything off the 40gig and my thought was
that I would just fdisk the 40gig (again, the one with 98se), then clone the
20gig over to it and use the 20gig as another data drive like the 120gig. My
concern is that if I remember correctly, since I originally had 98se
installed on the 40gig, then added the 20gig and installed XP as a dual
boot, that there is info such as a boot record and all on that C: drive and
if I format my 40gig I could screw things up royally. I have a good
suspicion that this would be a simple fix, but just beyond my knowledge.
Could someone please help me with this so that I can move forward? Other
than the help, does some folks on this group have any suggestions in
addition to this that may be of value? Thank you so very much.

By the way, I am wanting to do this because having this dual boot is
screwing with some set ups on other programs and I just don't see the need
to have 98se anymore as it is just taking up space and resources. Also
should add that the physical drive order is: 40gig and 120 gig first, then
the 20gig. Will I need to change this? Thanks and hope to hear many or one
very knowledgable one soon.

If you format the system partition (C:\), then you'll need to restore the
Windows XP boot sector from the recovery console. If you tried to move/copy
the XP boot partition to the system partition, then you'll have the 100's or
more registry entries pointing to E:\ (or whatever it is) for the operating
system and any installed applications to deal with (among other things).

But that dpesn
t help me figure out what to do. Was trying to figure out what to do and
hoping for that input through this source? But nontheless, that was
knowledge that I will retain when going about this process. Thanks.

What this means is; formatting the system partition is doable, while moving
the boot partition is not a realistic option.

I am sure there is a solution out there. I just don't want to reinstall.
Thought I had read somewhere what to do so that no problems are encountered.
Anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks.

Come on, doesn't anyone else have anything else to offer on this subject?
Would be greatly appreciated.

You already have the best advice available. That is why no one else has =
chimed in. Check out this tutorial; =
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/xpfaq.html#Remove HTH. But I would =
suggest that if you want XP to be installed to the C drive to format and =
reinstall.

You'll need to format (wipe clean) the drive.
