View Full Version : Can't view faxes

I'm running XP Pro, and recently reformatted/reinstalled. I copied the inbox
and outbox faxes and put them in the new setup. Everything is OK except for
one thing: I can send/receive faxes with no problem, but when I double-click
any fax (including ones I've sent/received since the reinstall), it will not
preview. I've checked the file associations for .tif files, and it shows
that it's associated with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Does anyone know
why this might be happening?

Thanks,
Mike Trozzo

There are many causes for this problem. Most often, this problem arises
because some other imaging application that you installed has set itself as
the default viewer for TIF files. To view faxes from the Fax Console, the
Windows Imaging and Fax viewer must be your default viewer for TIF files.
You can easily restore that setting in Windows Explorer > Folder Options.
File Types. For most users the command line should read:

"rundll32.exe <drive>:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscree n %1"

Another common cause of this problem is firewall software Trojan horse
rules. The most common is one that ships with Norton Internet Security.
Details on that on are available here:

Russ,

Thanks for responding. Windows Imaging & Fax Fiewer already is the default
for TIF and TIFF files. As far as the firewall, I use ZoneAlarm Pro, and I
gave MS Fax full permissions, same as it was before the format/reinstall.
When I double-click a file in the actual folder (C:\Dokumente und
Einstellungen\All Users\Anwendungsdaten\Microsoft\Windows NT\MSFax\Sent
Items (or Inbox, same thing happens))*, the viewer comes up and shows the
fax as it should. The problem is when I double-click a fax from within the
console.

*Using the German version of XP

Mike

Have you applied the hotfix from the Windows Update site that addresses this
issue? As I recall it's Q322011
