A file is 'piece' of information in a computer. This might be a letter (a
text file) a picture (a graphic file) a piece of music (an mp3 file) or a
million other different ones for various purposes.
These files are 'strings' of binary digits ( the '0's and '1's ) which
behave in certain ways when read by a computer programme such as Word,
Photoshop or Jukebox.
A 'folder' is the name given to that part of the computer drive's 'index'
which allows the computer and its user to find the location of every file
held on the computer's drive.
So if you were to type a letter that you wanted to refer to later, on your
computer, you would use something like Microsoft Word to create then save
the letter as a text (or document) file.
To find the letter later on, you might create a folder (right click on the
desktop, then select 'new' then select 'folder') called 'Renee's letters'.
You would then be able to access that folder to find your letter(s).
It helps to keep a computer running far quicker and smoother using this
system, rather than having files scattered at random all over.
In the time its taken me to type this someone's probably posted a far
shorter elegant explanation. So it goes.
Anyway, hope this helps.
