Does Win XP PRO NOT come with word or works?
Can't do spell check in email with out it?
For the price it should have EVERYTHING.

Lynn,
Both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Works are separate purchasable products.
see

No. No version of Windows has ever done so.

Correct - you need an Office application installed (note that vanilla Works
does NOT count).

Why? I bought 2000 when it was new, cost me the same price - I wasn't
expecting to find Office 2000 in the box - did you expect to find Office 95
in the box when you bought Windows 95?

Lynn;
Windows XP is an operating system, not an office suite.
No Microsoft operating system has ever included Microsoft Word, Works
or other Microsoft Office applications.
Many computer manufacturers have included some of these with their
computers.
You need to buy them if you do not have them.
http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/
http://www.microsoft.com/office/howtobuy/choosing.asp
Please define "Everything"
Microsoft Office Developer costs $799 US all by itself.
That is more than many computers and well over double the cost of
Windows XP Pro.

If you don't need everything that comes with Microsoft Office, check around
the net or local software stores for Microsoft Works Suite with Word. You
can usually find it for between $50.00 and $100.00. This works fine.

I guess I'm used to buying a package system, this is the first time I bought
a Operating system for a barebones system that I built. I have Corel Word
perfect suite 7. Can I set that up to use for outlook?

Be advised that the Microsoft Works Suite 2003 is a upgrade and
requires qualifying programs before it will install. Go to this
link for additional information:

Hi Lynn,
I'm not familiar with WordPerfect and it's functionality, I've only used OE
and Outlook for mail. The spell checker from the link I posted will work
with OE and Outlook. It's what I used to restore spell checking on my
laptop....much easier than trying to edit the registry.

Always read the fine print to see what version you are buying, what type
license you are getting, and what systems it will run on..

No. Not only is its performance with XP flaky, it is not an MS product.
Until the DOJ and/or Brussels demands that MS be broken up and kills its
monopoly, only MS Office applications can be used.

If, at times, flakiness is what it takes to have an application behave as it
should, then bring on the flakes. There are other resourceful people in the
world besides those working for MS.
