Hi,
In preparing for a recent reformat of my computer, I backed up my My
Documents folder, then zipped the backup file using Winzip 7.0 as it would
have been too large for my storage medium (I have never been able to get the
Windows XP backup facility to compress the backup file, the way I used to be
able to do in Windows 98).
When I tried to unzip the file, however, I found that it was corrupted and
the unzip process stopped just before completion. Using Winzip's help file
I found a way to recover at least some of the zipped backup file, and from
the size of the unzipped file I believe that I had recovered most of the
original.
But when I tried to restore the backup file, the process stopped in its
early stages with the error message: "An inconsistency was encountered in
the requested backup file." When I clicked on the Report option, I got this
message:
Catalog Status
----------------------
Restore Status
Operation: Restore
Backup of "C:", Restored to"C: \Documents and Settings\Hubert Earl\My
Documents\0 MY DATA\"
Backup set #1 on media #1
Backup description: "Set created 8/2/2003 at 7:26 AM"
Restore started on 8/7/2003 at 10:00 AM.
Error: An inconsistency was encountered in the requested backup file.
Restore completed on 8/7/2003 at 10:01 AM.
Directories: 323
Files: 3446
Skipped: 1
Bytes: 67,060,343
Time: 1 minute and 15 seconds
I then tried restoring the backup file to a different folder, to see if I
would be lucky enough to get thru on a second attempt, but with the same
result. And when I tried to delete the second folder, the deletion process
stopped before completion with the message: "Cannot delete accomodation ad
021017 [one of my backed up files]: Cannot find the specified path. Make
sure you specify the correct path."
Is there any way of recovering the files which were not restored?
Sincerely,
--
