I think you are confusing msn messenger with windows
messenger. These messeges are the result of spy ware and
an open port on your computer. The best way to get rid of
these annoying messegs is to purchase a firewall program
such as Zone Alarm. Also download and run adaware and
spybot to rid your machine from these little critters.

And at that, windows Messenger is the XP variant on MSN Messenger - an
instant messenger program. There are two separate things' these
Instant messaging utilities, and the 'Messenger Service' which is used
on networks for their Admins to broadcast things like 'Server closing in
5 minutes'. It is the latter involved in popups, through a hole in the
NetBIOS networking which is being exploited. Either use a firewall and
set it to a level that blocks NetBIOS, or disable this Messenger
Service, at Control Panel - Admin Tools - Services; double click
Messenger and first click Stop, then set Startup type to Disabled and
Apply, ready for next boot
