How can I turn on the greyed out items in some drop down
menus so they become active?

That depends on the menu. This may be caused by that you are offline
(dimmed entries in the Favorites menu for all sites that are not
stored in the Internet Explorer's cache actually) or by user
restrictions etc.

Greyed out means the items are not available at the moment. For example,
until you copy or cut an object or some text, you will find the Edit> Paste
option greyed out. Copy some text. Look again and it is now a menu command
that you can select.
So, in order to answer your question, we need to know what commands are
greyed out and where they are located. A short description about what you're
trying to accomplish would be helpful too.

I want to reinstall XP pro and to backup my e-mail
messages before I do so.I tried different ways with no
luck, when I searched My Computer for *.dbx files I was
getting nothing. I know the messages are there because I
can access them from OE. I would like to activate
the"Save As" button in the FILE menu in OE, then maybe I
can save the messages that way.Or I would appreciate any
other method that u can suggest.
