Just in case this can save someone else some hair-pulling.....

Windows XP OS/ MSN messenger would start up, sign in, then freeze while
attempting to load online contacts. Windows messenger would appear to not
start, never display anything on the display, yet would be running in the
process list.

I uninstalled, cleaned registry, re-installed, and basically tried
everything to no avail EXCEPT rebooting router. Although I could surf and
send/receive email, there was still some confusion (maybe a port problem?)
at the router. A simple reboot of the router and all problems went away.

Greetings Marc,

Something similar occurred a year or so ago when Linksys broke the UPnP capabilities in one
of their router's firmware releases, prompting Messenger to display the behavior you saw. I
don't believe what you saw was the same problem (the solution was to simply upgrade the
firmware), but more than likely, the router did have a problem (temporary or otherwise),
prompting the same effect.

Appreciate the feedback =).
