View Full Version : outlook hangs with messenger disabled

Hi,

I disabled Windows Messenger from startin using the
gpedit.msc utility in XP Pro. However, after doing so,
Outlook Express hangs for about 30 seconds at the splash
screen. The option in Outlook to run messenger is
unchecked yet messenger still starts after I've re-enabled
it. I've been through several XP Pro installs that
included Outlook Express and I never ran into this issue.
I've always disabled Messenger and even forced it to show
in the Add/Remove Windows components list by editing the
sysoc.inf file. I've never had this problem. Outlook
insists on starting messenger and if it's disabled, it
hangs.

Thanks
Pete

Greetings Pete,

To keep Messenger disabled and to stop Outlook Express from "hanging", simply download and
run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
After this, Outlook Express will no longer attempt to start Messenger and as such, will not
"hang" when Messenger is disabled.
