At startup I get a message that lasts 45 seconds before
it finishes booting up. How can I get rid of this message?

Hi, Al.
That's not a WinXP message. It sounds like a message from your computer's
BIOS. WinXP can not even BEGIN to load until you get past this message.
Are you running some third-party boot manager, such as Boot Magic or
BootItNG? Are you in a LAN? What make and model computer you running?

Hi R. C.,
I am running a Compaq 2570US with XP Pro which I bought
about 2 weeks ago. I am running all the original
software. I am not in a LAN. I tried changing the boot
loader timeout (time Windows will wait for a selection)
but it has not booted to windows yet, so there is no
change.

Hi, Al.
Thanks for the additional info. I've never used a Compaq, so I hope someone
will jump in with some details here.

Not surprising. As I said, your boot process has not got to this point yet.
It's hanging up before it ever starts loading Windows. This message is
coming from your computer's BIOS, not from Windows.
I'm only guessing here since, as I said, I know nothing of Compaq. But I
think you should press Esc and see what your present boot order is. Your
computer may have instructions to boot from floppy or CD, and it's trying to
find a bootable disk in that drive. It finally gives up on that and moves
on to the second device in the boot order, which would be your hard drive.
It finds a bootable partition there and can begin the boot process. If you
change the boot order to HD first, your delay should disappear.
I hope some Compaq user out there will confirm or correct this. ;^}

HI, RC
I changed the boot order to HD first but there was no
change. I changed it back to the default order which is
the floppy, CD then the HD. At the message when I press
ESC to go to the change boot order menu (or F2 to go to
the setup menu) the message still has to time out before
it goes to those menus. I also set the BIOS to its
default values and nothing helped. Thanks for your
suggestions.

Hi, Al.
I keep hoping somebody who knows Compaq will jump in here. You really need
someone who knows how to get into the Compaq BIOS and make the proper
settings. Do you know anybody in town who has a Compaq? Have you read the
manual? Have you looked at the Tech Support pages on the HP/Compaq website?
All I can do is repeat that this is NOT a Windows problem. It happens
before Windows even begins to load. This is a Compaq problem.
When you find the answer, please post it here for the benefit of others. In
a newsgroup, we all learn from each other. ;<)

Hi RC,
Compaq tech support says disconnecting the CMOS battery
for 15 minutes might fix the problem but they do not
recommend opening the case. They gave me phone numbers of
Compaq technicions to talk to so I will follow up on that.
