a virus or a glitch in xp?

My friend is not sure whether he has a virus or not.
He can get into OE for about 3 minutes and then a message
says that his computer is going to shutdown in 1 minute.
It shuts down and then reboots itself but although he can
get into OE again he cannot use his browser, so therefore
cannot get on the net. He tries to send emails but the
same message comes up and his computer shuts down within
3 minutes again.
Anyone have any ideas as to what's going on please?

Thank you David. That was my feeling too.
Unfortunately he'd not kept up with his updates so
obviously getting this across to everyone is very
important I think.
