View Full Version : Encrypted file shows as un-encrypted
Microsoft

I have salvaged a file after deletion using a rescue tool.
However, it was encrypted file, but after the rescue it shows as normal file
and is inaccesible.
Does anyone knows how to to restore it to its previous status? it means
adding the needed information to the MFT to identify it as encrypted.
I use XP sp 2 and use the same user that encrypted the file.

Without a backup of the original Encryption Certificate Key, encrypted =
files
are unrecoverable as they will stay encrypted forever. There is no =
recovery
method since the encryption algorithm is now different with a reinstall
of Windows XP.
See if the following article helps in any way:

1. There is no re-install of XP, it is the same install that encrypted the
file.
2. The file was deleted by mistake with its folder. In order to salvage it I
used a salvage tool, but it does not support the encryption function.
3. The result is file which is shown as "normal" but is encypted.
In that case can I re-encypt it?
P.S - I have corrected the default user "microsoft"
