>instead of having your tcp settings on auto, go to your
other computer do a IPCONFIG /ALL and write down the ip
address then go to the other and change dthe auto to the
next tcp address. (ie:192.168.1.1 the other would be
192.168.1.2) reboot the computer it should work.

Thanks for your advice very much! However, it's still in vain.
Moreover, I discovered that one of the PC shows "Node Type" as "Hybrid",
while the other is "Unknown". Both PCs have their "IP Routing Enabled" and
"WINS Proxy Enabled" set to "No"........ are these pieces of information
important?

check the machine that has none you may have a bad nic
