View Full Version : System Shutdown: Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

I need HELP!! I'm not a computer whiz. In the past
few days, every time I start up my PC and go to the
Internet I can only stay connected a few minutes as I get
a "SYSTEM SHUTDOWN" message on my screen. It says
Windows must now restart because Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) service terminated unexpectedly.
It goes on to say: System shut down was initiated by
NT Authority/System.

Then it just drops me off the Internet and shuts my
entire PC completely down.

I have no idea what this is, why it is happening all of a
sudden, nor do I have any idea how to fix it. Can you
help?

I did type in the "Search" space of Windows.com the words:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and it seems there are some
patches, but I'm not sure if any of these apply to me.

I use Windows XP (Home Addition) - nothing fancy - but
these seem to refer to Beta, etc. and I don't want to do
something that will make matter worse.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this all of a sudden
and what I should do. I'm not even sure I will get this
message finished before I get shut down, but I'm trying.

Thanks,
Maxine Hickenbotham

The first thing you should do is enable Windows XP's built-in Firewall:

1. In Control Panel, double-click Networking and Internet Connections, =
and
then click Network Connections.
2. Right-click the connection on which you would like to enable ICF, and
then click Properties.
3. On the Advanced tab, click the box to select the option to Protect my
computer or network.

Step #2:

Visit http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_msblast.htm and follow
the instructions.=20

Step #3:

Download and install the following:

Blaster Worm: Critical Security Patch for Windows XP (32-bit version)
