Hi

does any one know why I have 2 copies of the i386 file
folder on my system? 1 is on the C drive and the other
is set in windows directory. I am cleaning my system and
want to know if I can delete the one on C drive.

any info would be appreciated

Thanks
Rene

If you have an OEM (preinstalled) computer and do not have an actual XP
cd(not a recovery cd, a real xp cd), then you'll need to leave those i386
folders if you ever want to reinstall xp. Most recovery cd use the i386
folders to reinstall xp. This oem dell computer I happen to be on right now
has 8 i386 folders. One on c:\ and the rest in windows folder and
subfolders. If you have an actual xp cd, then the c:\i386 folder is not
needed.

The one in C: is probably one put there by the makers to do the
installation from, and would be needed for a reinstall (though if you
have a CD burner you could burn it to CD). The other may be a copy of
that with the files expanded from compressed form, which Windows inade
at de, but is more likely I think to be in Windows\ServicePackFiles
That one contains the versions of components that were included in SP1,
to use instead. Again you could burn that folder to CD. If you do that
you need to run regedit and adjust the places where Windows will look
for files - at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup
adjust the values off SOurcePath and ServicepackSourcePath respectively
to be the CD drive
