Networked video

I have searched for support before posting this, with no
luck.
What steps (if any) do I take in order to view video
(like PVR pre-recordings) on my network?
I would like to view my shows (saved to large RAID
storage comp. in upstairs closet), on my Dell I8600
notebook, or view on Widescreen TV via S-video from
Winfast A340 card on comp. in living room.
I have researched streaming, but it relates to website
applications. I would like to avoid creating VPN or
similar environment. I am using XP Professional SP-1 on
all computers.
