dumb question, how do I know if I'm running the 32 or 64
bit version of xp home? I'd like to download the LovSan
patch, but not sure which one to download. When I go to
look, it tells me in the system description that I'm
running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack
1, but nothing to denote 32 or 64?
any help for a very ignorant user?
thanks

Marc;
You have 32 bit Windows XP.
Also 64 bit is available for Windows XP Pro not Windows XP Home.
Also use the automobile test. (junkers don't count)
Did your computer with Windows XP cost more or less than your
automobile?
If your computer cost less, you have 32 bit.
If your computer cost more, you have 64bit.
Windows XP 64 bit with the required 64bit Intel Itanium processor is
much more expensive than any home computer.

Chris;
The Alienware is a bad comparrison. less than $2600.
You choose a pricy manufacturer to begin with.
Power it up with most of the extras and it is still about $1000
cheaper than a cheap 64 bit computer.
Windows XP64bit will add about $400.
Total about $3700 US on the HP 64 bit.
The point is 64bit are way more expensive.
More than 4 times what the typical home user will pay for the
computer.
Next time try to make a fair comparrison.
People that buy computers even getting close to this price will know
they have a 32 bit computer.
Go higher and they know they have a 64 bit computer.
Yes they are "soooo expensive"

Links to 64 bit Tablet PC and 64 bit laptops would more support your

Yes, a basic bottom line PC is about 1/4 the price. However, the 64 bit
system is not so pricey that it needs compared to anything, especially a
car. A good gaming rig can run a lot more than the typical 64 bit system. I
would pay the extra for gaming rig since 64 bit computing won't really be
useful to the typical home user anytime soon. The bottom line is that the
price difference isn't so much that it should be used to differentiate
between the OS'es. The splash screen or the system properties will say 64
bit edition if it is, or nothing if it is not.

The Alienware computer uses an AMD Athlon processor (32 bit), only the
Opteron is 64 bit,
but you cannot run the 64 pit XP on any AMD chip of any kind so it is not a
good example anyway.

Jupiter, we just purchased several Dell P4 machines and they ran over $4500
each.
Much more expensive then the 64 bit models.
It all depends on what you want.
Chris is correct that the price is no longer a good gauge.

To a point maybe.
But did you buy a top of the line 32 bit computer or lower end?
Considering the price, it would appear to be a high end 32 bit.
What is the cost of a high end 64 bit computer?
The average 32 bit computer costs way less than the average 64 bit
computer.
Therefore 64 bit cost more than 32 bit computers.

Yes it was a "high" end computer.
No one said the 64 bit did not cost more, "on average".
But even a high end 64 bit machine still costs far less then an automobile.
I have seen some people say "a 64 bit computer would cost at least $10,000
or more"
but this is not true, just as the "automobile test" is not true.
You yourself said junkers do not count, so can you point me to a brand new
car that costs
less then $5000 ?
