View Full Version : Clone Winxp to new HDD
ms
December 6th 03, 01:44 PM
I am using WinXP Pro which was installed on a 13GHDD.
Now, I installed a 60G HHD to replace the 13G HDD and use
Norton Ghost 2003 to clone the system to the New HDD and
dismantled the old HDD. However, when the PC boot from the New
HDD, it hang at the WinXP welcome screen, only the mouse
pointer could move. I don't want to install the Win Xp
again on the new HDD as I have to reinstall all the
application once again. Please let me know if there is
anyway to solve the problem. I keep all the HW
configuration except the new larger capacity HDD.

that's bad! I think, the HDDs are different, so there may be anything wrong
with the system
the Norton Ghost couldn't make everything right
Sorry, I think the better way is to reinstall the XP, it's bother
I'm very sorry I can't expression well, in order to answer this question, I
have to find the Englsih dictionary many times because I'm only a Chinese
boy, do you understand me?

Leave the old drive set as Master and connect the new drive as slave on the
same controller. Do not boot to the Desktop but boot with the Ghost 2003
boot disk set. Go to Options->Image/Tape Tab and select Image All
Then do a Disk -> Disk Copy. Shutdown and remove the old drive and reconnect
the new drive as Master on the Primary Controller. Reboot to Desktop. Later
you can reconnect the old drive as slave and format.

Thanks Harry,
May I understand what you mean is:
1. Copy all the image from old HDD in Master to new HDD
2. Do the diskcopy with all subdirectories from the Master in DOS. Wonder if
I can copy all files in Windows?
3. Then disconnect the old.

You said you have Ghost 2003. Create the Ghost Diskette set and boot with
them instead of running Ghost 2003 from Windows.
1) connect the new drive as slave on Primary Controller (do not change your
old drive just connect the new drive as slave)
2) Start computer with the Ghost 2003 boot diskettes
3) Go to Options->Image/Tape Tab and select the option to "Image All"
4)Then still using Ghost do a Disk->Disk copy with the old drive as the
"Source" and the new drive as the "Destination"
5) When finished do not restart into Windows instead shutdown and remove the
old drive then rejumper the new drive as Master and connect it to the
Primary Controller where the old drive was connected.
6) Now reboot into Windows
The reason for doing this is so that the drive letter on the new drive will
be "C" and not "E" or some other letter that will affect how your
applications run.
Ghost 2003 has a decent manual you might what to read it before you clone
your drive.

When you open the case and install the new drive you should make the new one
master and the old slave first before the Image file or ghosting is done.
