View Full Version : XP Home vs. Pro

Hi...

What are the actual differences between XP Home and Pro? I want to do
some .NET programming, and I've been led to believe that Pro has some
things that Home doesn't which .NET needs. I have XP Home. Is there
any way to make XP Home into XP Pro (or close enough to do .NET
programming) without buying the XP Pro upgrade?

Thanks!

IIS is the first thing that comes to mind in regard to .NET programming.
If you are going to be doing any ASP.NET development you'll need a web
server. XP Pro includes IIS, XP Home does not. There is no way to make
XP Home like Pro other than upgrading to XP Pro.

You may want to post this in one of the .NET programming groups. Other
than ASP.NET, I can't immediately think of any other differences that
would come into play for normal development of .NET applications.

For a high level list of some of the other differences see:

Hi David,

You'll be better off with Pro, see:

Try these sites:

There's no way to get Professional without buying it.

See

For .NET programming you will probably find you do need some of the Pro
only features

Alex,

The article you reference is indeed interesting. The last line of
that article says:

"Note that Microsoft is offering a less-expensive Professional
"Step-Up" upgrade for Home users that wish to move to XP Pro."

That's what I'm interested in. I already have XP Home and, right or
wrong, I'm just reluctant to pay for the complete upgrade package just
to get a couple of extra features. Any info on whether this is still
an option, or did MS discontinue this?

Holy crap. After seeing that list, I'm glad I bought Pro instead of Home.

Why? I have 2 HE machines and one Pro machine. Do you actually understand
the difference between Pro and HE or are you making a knee jerk reaction
based on assumption?

That article actually dates back to the earliest days of XP. That Step
up only lasted about a month and is no longer available
