On brand new COMPAQ with wxp preinstalled, recovery disk
#4 aborted during its creation. subsequently files missing
or damaged messages. initially seemed limited to a Norton
AntiVirus problem. have solved that by web downloads.

Have run a COMPAQ recovery with all 5 disks, #4 ejected at
<DATA7.INP CANNOT BE RECOVERED> and when retried the drive
slowed markedly at <DATA7.INP>

Now have a NO SHUT DOWN situation, and erratic behaviour
[eg on help and support left pane get pictures/bullets but
no words; and on right screen it invites me to connect to
internet, though I am already, and though that connection
was recognised a few days back. similar problems on
Outlook Express, etc]

What is DATA7.INP?
Is my software installation faulty?

Hi,

Sounds like a dirty CD, try wiping it gently with a soft lint-free =
cloth. Could also be a dirty lens in the CD drive, a cheapie cleaning =
kit can help - it doesn't have to be pc-specific.
