Ok, I'll ask again and maybe get a polite reply instead of Rifleman's
useless LOL?
What is top posting?
Yes I'm serious and yes I've read about newsgroup ettiquette.

Top posting is like I am doing, when the reply to a post is placed at the
top. Now scroll down to the bottom.

This is bottom posting, Robyn. There are merits to both methods. Use
whichever you want.

Greetings --
"Top-posting" is placing the reply to an earlier post at the top,
as I've done. This is the default behavior of some news readers, such
as Outlook Express. Some people prefer top-posting, while others
prefer bottom-posting (as the term implies, placing replies _below_
the original message.)
While I think the issue is largely a matter of personal taste and
reading convenience, some people get quite fanatical about it,
claiming years of precedence for bottom-posting as the only "proper"
way to do it. It all reminds me of Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's
Travels," and the wars between the Big-Endians and the Small-Endians
(iow, which end of a boiled egg should be broken first).

Top posting is the default way in OE. I think it is the way it should be
done. I am "smart enough" to remember what the original post was. I have
blisters on my middle finger from scrolling down to see what the reply is
from those who bottom post. Sometimes, there is a 3Kb response that only has
only 3 words to say. Why go through all the dribble leading up to those 3
words. I top post out of consideration to others who care to read the
response, not re-read all the other thread in it's entirety.

To paraphrase Mr Spock "Top posting is illogical, Captain". Who answeres a
question /before/ it's asked?! Or, to put it another way; imagine a PC
magazine Q&A section - they don't print the questions before the answers -
there'd be an outcry if they did!

Many of us also have our newsreader set to "Group Messages as =
Conversations". So there is somewhat of an order for messages in a =
thread. Which makes reading messages that were made using "bottom =
posting" take up more time than it should.=20
Many people in this thread have mentioned that people can Edit the news =
messages, delete the old text from the original message and subsequent =
replies, and keep the thread "Lean & Mean". The problem for is that many =
don't. I have seen the size of a MS News Message in "TEXT" format grow =
from one kilobyte (1KB), to over a ten kilobyte (10kb) one. There is no =
need for that, especially when the bulk of the size for message is not =
even related to the "Subject Line:" of the original message/post. The =
problem is many people go "Off-topic", I would suggest if a person has =
no solution/suggestion for original poster or question for help, move on =
to the next message, and don't add to the thread.
And with "Top Posting", it is easier for the sender to write his/her =
reply to a previous message, followed by the 'text' of the message =
that's being replied to. Then the rest of the 'text' in the reply =
message can be highlighted, than deleted, to save bandwidth. =20

I've come to the conclusion that bottom-posting advocates have very short
memories, and therefore they are incapable of posting without first
re-reading every line of every post in the thread. And they always trot out
that specious answer/question thing. After all, isn't there a quiz show
where you have to provide a question for an answer? That should be case
closed!

Greetings --
Actually, the reason I prefer reading top-posted responses is that
all too many (as in the overwhelming majority - somewhere in the
neighborhood of 90%, the last time I bothered to count) bottom-posters
are also "too lazy to snip." In the longer threads, scrolling down
through line upon line upon line of previously read material to find
only a four word response is simply too tedious and time consuming for
my taste.
But, as I said (or actually implied, really) to each his own.

Most of us have newsreaders that thread. Use View menu - Current View -
Group Messages By Conversation. Then you won't need to read the messages

So do I - read my headers. I still say - you don't read a book from the
bottom up.....and as this is a HIGH volume group, I DON'T display all the
read messages in one thread. Unfortunately OE doesn't have the capability,
unlike Netscape, Mozilla and Thunderbird, to display Threads with New
messages - it's either ALL messages or New messages only. Therefore, in a
HIGH volume group, you have to have a compromise view which where bottom
posting comes in as it means you can refresh your memory about the thread,
which may not be until the next day.

No and neither do you most likely.
However I do use a bookmark so I do not need to read all the
previously read chapters to find where I am at.
A book is not really a good comparison.
I prefer top since what is new is on top and easy to read.
IF I want to know more, I can scroll down.
Otherwise, I need do nothing since what I want is front and center on
the screen.
There are valid reasons for both, however top posting seems easier and
it is also that way by default for many users.
That alone is a good reason to top post in this forum.
Another observation by me:
Many of the die hard bottom posters I have seen really argue the point
referencing ancient history (technologically speaking) as a president.
These same people drive cars and fly airplanes instead of walk in
sandals and ride horses.
Times change, and many other things change also.
Post the way you like and prefer, there is no absolute standard that
states how you must post.

The issue for me is when there is a mix of the two methods in the one

Hi Rob,
It is a matter of personal preference as to whether you "top post" or
"bottom post". I prefer top, others prefer bottom posting. I think it is
easier to follow the thread with top posting. As I mentioned, I remember
what the OP was, all I care to see is the responses to the OP, and not have
to scroll through up to 10 BM's or rhetoric to see a three word reply. This
post is an example, I have deleted all of the trailing posts in this
response.

Ok, I'm back and NO I didn't intend starting this and after 2 days away from
my beloved pc got quite a shock to find all this discussion going on. (I'm a
"she" by the way).
I asked a question hoping to get one reply, not find about 30. Never did I
dream I would start such a commotion but thankyou to everyone for your
views - it was enjoyable reading, quite entertaining at times.
I realized my error in asking the question originally in reply to a post on
a different topic - Oohps, not meant to change the topic are we, so I posted
a fresh question as Rifleman's LOL did not answer my query (yes rifleman,
that was a reply to my reply/question, not to the original poster)
I had assumed "top posting" was starting at the top but thought I may have
it wrong when someone complained about it as personally I hate having to
scroll down through a heap of stuff I've already read in a previous thread.
However, when posting to a group I like to try and do what the readers
prefer - if they are kind enough to give me some of their own time to read a
question and answer it, let them read it how they want it.
Judging by the comments here, I think "top posting" wins so I will continue
to do this.
I am also in a time zone of GMT+10 so unless I want to get out of bed in the
middle of the night, I don't get your replies until you are all asleep in
bed.
My apologies for writing so much but I want you to understand I did not
start this intentionally.
Thanks Everyone

And have you noticed how the "OP" hasn't responded to any of the
subsequent posts in this thread? Could it be that his/her sole intend
was to start a flame war, and we all fell for it?

Greetings --
Thanks for laying my concerns to rest; I do so dislike being
"taken in." I'm glad to hear that my suspicions were unfounded.
A search for knowledge should never be discouraged, and your goal
of adjusting to posting style to fit each specific news group is
laudable. Just remember that you'll never please everybody, and don't
take any unfavorable responses personally.

Way to go Robyn,
"Judging by the comments here, I think "top posting" wins so I will continue
to do this."
Yes, top posting is at the top.
"I don't get your replies until you are all asleep in bed."
Who said we all sleep in beds? (chiding)

Try your space bar when you run into those posts. Ctrl+End works too but
space bar is easier. And when reaching the end of a post, pressing space
bar again will also advance to the next unread message.

TIP for Robyn: Once a thread moves into the discussion of top/bottom
posting -- it is guaranteed it will be lengthy one.

If you missed the original post. Then YOU can scroll down to read it.
Why should we be forced to scroll through a post we've already read??
Especially, When as noted before, we have to scroll through 15kb or more
of repeated post to read a two or three word response.

Top posting or bottom posting doesn't matter as much as the effort you
force the reader to make to read useful content.
If you top post, make sure the part of the message you are replying to
is within decent scrolling distance by trimming the included quoted
text. If you bottom post, trim the quoted text heavily so that readers
can scroll easily to your reply.
The one thing people hate the most is scrolling three pages to read "me
too" as the useless reply. In my opinion if you are too lazy to trim,
you should top post.
There is a third option called "inline" where you embed your reply
inside the quoted text. This is most useful when you have replies to
multiple parts of the quoted text. Be careful about quote marks and
indentation so people aren't confused about which is your text and which
is quoted.

If you're implying there's a correct way, there's not. It can be irritating
trying to read a thread (group of sequential replies to same original
message) if repliers are using both top and bottom posting.
Up here is the way MS OE newsreader replies by defaut.
This is called top posting.
"Robyn" > wrote in message
...

In the middle means you're replying to what's immediately above, not below.
Snipping means to delete some information in the original post, then reply
below that to the information that was left. This is much worse that
top-posting in some circles.

Down here is normally used for typical usenet replies. A typical add-on
newsreader will reply down here. This is neither right or wrong. This was
the only location normally used for usenet replies for many years.

This thread is like "Deja Vous"(sp?) I don't speak French. I have seen or,
think I've seen, the same thing before, at least once a month for as long as
I have had a computer.
