Hi there Dave,

Try these steps to leverage performance:
* Click Start, choose Run, type "MSCONFIG" (with out quotation marks) and
click OK.
* Select StartUp tab and deselect all programs (except Antivirus, firewall
programs etc)
* Click OK and restart the computer.

You may download and install the Ad-aware spyware removal utility from the
following Web site:
http://www.webattack.com/get/adaware.shtml

Initiate the Adaware and it will deep scan the registry for spywares, After
the scan is finished, click [Next] button. Select all the items
(checkboxes). right click on any object in the "Scan result" list and choose
[Select all objects], Click Next and click OK to confirm spyware removal.

How much RAM anyone needs depends on what apps he runs, but 128MB
isn't enough for anyone with XP. For most people, good
performance starts around 256MB, so yes, I would add at least
another 128MB.

Almost certainly. 128 while it is officially the minimum 'recommended'
size is really not enough and implies endless swapping to the page file.
An extra 256 would be plenty for general use: people with heavy graphics
use need as much as they can get. Even 256 total would be reasonable

You need to be sure that the new RAM is accurately matched - I suggest
www.crucial.com where you can check against details of the machine, and
get top quality at reasonable price. Do not cut corners on quality of
RAM in XP.

Once installed you should check at Control Panel - System - Advanced -
Performance Settings - Advanced - Virtual Memory click Change to make
sure that there is enough page file allotted (another problem is that at
128 there may have been not nearly enough). I'd suggest an initial size
of 250 and a plentiful Maximum - say 700 or 800 against contingencies

128 for XP is _really_ bad. You really want 512 for best results.

With 128 you're already swapping even before the OS finishes booting.
