Hi Malcolm,

Why does Windows XP Style change to Windows Classic Style?
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm

This has to do with a Policy setting made either via gpedit.msc or manually
via the registry.

The side effects are that Windows and Buttons are greyed out under Desktop
Properties/Appearance and the check box under System Properties/Advanced/
Performance/Settings that reads: Use visual styles on windows and buttons,
does not remain checked.

This edit corrects that behavior. Download and apply either one on line 214,
they are the same edit.

Other checkpoints:
1. Right click the My Computer
icon/Properties/Advanced/Performance/Settings. Verify that: Use visual
styles on windows
and buttons is checked.
2. Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View. User Common Tasks in
Folders.
3. Right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance. Windows and Buttons
choose: Windows XP style.
4. Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Scroll down to Themes and verify
that the service is started.

Kelly,
Thanks for the indepth reply. Unfortunately it has not=20
fixed the problem. A bit more info...

The Windows/Buttons is not greyed out, it just has Windows=20
Classic as the only option on the pull-down. I do have=20
the use visual styles on windows problem (I can set-it,=20
but it does not remain set (ie it is unchecked the next=20
time I open the dialog)).
I have changed the registry with the fix on Line 214 - no=20
change. I then ran the fix on Line 271 - again no change.=20
I then ran the gpedit.msc (not something I've done before=20
and I am the only one to access this PC) and all the=20
options state "Not Configured".

So I am still stumped - any clues?
I really appreciate your help on this. It was working=20
originally, but either a hotfix or my setting it to=20
Windows Classic has meant that I cannot go back!

More info.

It seems that I have just one theme in c:/windows/resources called luna.
When I load this (double clicking) it does not make any difference. Does
this help the diagnosis?
