I have found out that I have a legacy keylogger.trojan
virus on my laptop. Norton Anti-Virus has identified it
but cannot clear it for me. It is attached to an item
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hnsys32.dll.
Can anyone tell me whether I can simply delete this item
file to get rid of the virus, or will it either cause a
problem with my PC or else in some way activate the virus
again?

If you search on www.symantec.com site there will be removal instructions,
Probably a direct access, to the page, from yr Norton reports section
