I'm writing on behalf of a work colleague who has a laptop with XP
Home Edition .... in Japanese
She brings the laptop into work, where we have a Win2k domain
she doesn't get authenticated on the domain but she can see some
shares and printers. And she can, or at least she could, log into a
share using her domain credentials. The very same way that I do it on
my Mac OS X laptop. My laptop is not on the domain, but I can connect
to shares using my domain credentials.
Recently things stopped working. When she trie to connect to share she
gets denied. Either by finding the share in the Entire Network, or
using Run to do a \\servername\share or \\serverIP\share
So I wondered if she could contact the share at all
So I pinged it from her laptop and got
Ping failed to transit error code 65
I looked that up and found that this was caused by a firewall running
locally or have ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) running. I was able
to find all the right properties sheets even thoug it's all in
Japanese and she has no firewall or ICS running. I get the same error
code pinging anything, google.com etc.
So anyone with any ideas ... please help
thanx

Difference between XP Home and XP Pro networking

[[.......XP Home Edition cannot be domain members, although they can access
resources on a domain member in the same way workgroup members running other
Windows platforms can access domain resources. They can connect to and use
network file and printer shares, provided they have a valid account in the
domain.]]
Valid account??
[[You can use ping to test both the computer name and the IP address of the
computer. If pinging the IP address is successful, but pinging the computer
name is not, you might have a name resolution problem. In this case, ensure
that the computer name you are specifying can be resolved through the local
Hosts file, by using Domain Name System (DNS) queries, or through NetBIOS
name resolution techniques.
This command is available only if the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol is
installed as a component in the properties of a network adapter in Network
Connections]]

Yes .. I know .... and I made a point of saying she wasn't joining the
domain cos she had XP Home Edition.

Yep ... said that aswell ... I pinged the IP and the name .. there is
no DNS problem ... names are resoloved correctly by DNS.

She's not joining the domain and she can't as we know ... she has XP
Home Edition

Also in my post I said I looked up the Error Code 65 ... and I know
it's firewall or ICS related

Wes ... I know you tried to help ..... but I don't think you read my
post. Perhaps You saw buzzwords
XP, Home Edition, Win2k, Domain, Error Code 65
and just listed off canned answers.
If I do figure it out .. I will let you know
