View Full Version : Right Click problems

Dave
December 5th 03, 12:38 AM
Hi All,
Not sure if anyone else is getting this, but we have a
user, (same everytime), that when they right click, doesnt
matter if it's on the desktop, or in an app. it takes
minutes to get the menu up. The way I resolve this is to
delete the local profile, (after saving data in a temp
area) log them back in, then copy the saved data back, not
including the ntuser.dat.
Does anyone know of an easier way as this seem drastick &
happens around once a month, & is a right pain.

Many thanks to all in advance.
Dave

Hi Dave,

This is common behavior if you have Xupiter installed and/or Hotbar. Even
worse for Hotbar. As it adds two extensions under: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT that
needs to be removed to stop the crashing.

If you would rather remove Hotbar use the edit on line 195:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Most times, the crashes are from right clicking and choosing New. If this
is your case, post back and I will list the two .dll's that need to be
removed.

If the above is not the case, but Xupiter applies:

Xupiter Toolbar Uninstaller (Line 167)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If neither apply, run the two edits on line 157:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Good luck and post back with your findings.

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for getting back, however, neither apply. Don't=20
have Hotbar, & haven't seen the other. The effected user=20
came back last night, & got a report at logon, that the=20
profile was corrupt. I am starting to think of a roaming=20
profile on the server, & delete the local, & roaming.=20
Then get a fresh one. but it's a pain at the moment, as=20
we don't have roaming setup.

Thanks for your help, not sure if there is an easier=20
option.

Dave, if this is the only user on this machine - look at hardware closer as
a possible source of the repeated corruption. Bad RAM, bad power supply,
failing hard disk, overheating, etc.

If this is the only profile (one of several), that gets damaged, you could
try using check disk to examine the surface of the hard drive to be sure
there are no damaged portions.

The only other thing that I can think of is that maybe someone needs to
watch how this user is logging on, the process of their workflow and how
they log off? For example and as you know, XP performs a *lot* of
housekeeping during the logoff of an account and the shutdown of the system.
It's possible they are corrupting their own profile over and over by simply
using wrong procedures. Other than that, what is different about this user's
profile from the others? Software installed? Software allowed to run at
startup? Updates current? and so on... Maybe there's an answer in there
somewhere?

Adding to the other suggestions, I have seen this delay when installed
applications add their shortcuts to the menu and when later uninstalled
(poorly) the shortcuts point to nowhere, hence the delay.

You are welcome, Dave. If the profile is corrupt:

Suggestions:

Right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Locate the
entries for your hard disks and double click each entry. On the Policies
tab, uncheck Enable write caching.

You will see a performance decrease because of this, but if the corrupt
registry/user profiles problems cease, then you'll be certain of the cause.

Logon to another account with admin privilege and run System Restore.
Choose the most recent restore point and SR should restore the user
hives.

Or...

Boot into safe mode and log in as Administrator. Copy ntuser.dat from
%windir%\repair to "Documents and Settings\[your user id]". Now do a system
restore to a point in time prior to when the corruption message began to
appear.

Or...

Relocate NTUserdat

Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList and find the profile you want to change
and then change ProfileImagePath to the ntuser.dat folder that you want to
use. You must manually copy or move the ntuser.dat file there.
