Just installed Windows xp, and can't find how to restore
my data files from Windows 98.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you have used the windows 98 copy of backup then you can't. Windows 98
uses the 'qic' file extension for backups whereas windows xp uses the 'bak'
extension. XP will not recognise the 'qic' file extension.
There used to be a third party software i think it was called mybackup or
something similar, which you could use to restore your files. However, the
last i heard they had removed the ability to open 'qic' files from the trial
version because people were just downloading the trial version and restoring
their backups in xp and then rebacking them up via xp. I believe the option
is available in the 'purchased' version.

Hi John,
That was Stomp you are thinking of. "Backup mypc" will work as well. See:

Thanks Rick, I couldn't think of the application name at the time. Do these
other apps support qic and is their a trial version? I'm just wondering if
these are worth recommending seeing that the stomp one no longer supports
qic on the trial version.

Picking up the tread for NTBackup, how can I maintain the Directory &
sub dir, integrity in it? All i get is pages full if files in the
restore and don't know where they came from.

Hi John,
30 trials here:
http://www.nprsoftware.com/support_download.php?type=trial&pn=bump
And, last I checked it still supported the .qic format.

Locate a better backup program. BackupMyPC works with its own scheduler.

Do you use a password to logon? Scheduling tasks requires that you do.
To get round that in XP Home, Kelly has a fix at
