View Full Version : TV Tuner Stops Responding (Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 817589)

January 31st 04, 02:54 AM
I am having the problem described in this article. The
article says Microsoft has a fix and I should contact
paid support. As I try to contact paid support through
the web site, I get in a continous loop of web pages.
There are no phone numbers provided either. The article
says:
"When you use a the TV tuner feature of your soundcard,
the TV tuner program may stop responding (hang). This
problem may occur if your processor uses hyperthread
technology.
"A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it
is only intended to correct the problem described in this
article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing
this specific problem. This fix may receive additional
testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by
this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the
next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.
"To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft
Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a
complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone
numbers and information about support costs, visit the
following Microsoft Web site:

How do I get this fix and why do I have to pay for it?

Hi, You get it by calling Microsoft. No other way
Note In *special cases*, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be *canceled* if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that
*a specific update will resolve your problem*.

Yes. But I cannot get the phone numbers off the site.
As I said, I get in a continuos loop of web pages that
repeat over and over if I go to:
"Assisted Paid Support
"Although OEM products are not eligible for no-charge
assisted support from Microsoft, some OEM products are
eligible for the paid assisted support options.
"Phone Numbers, Support Options and Pricing
Find phone numbers, support options, and pricing
information by product.
"Quick navigation guide: Select your product from the
drop-down list, and if presented with the option "How did
you obtain your product?", then select "It was purchased
separately" to view assisted paid support options.
NOTE: No-charge support options on these pages are only
available to customers who did not receive their software
through an OEM."
The good news is I just saw SP1a coming out next week
contains my fix. For future use, how do I find the phone
number. Thanks.

Hi, SP1a has been out for a year. To get the phone number you just select
the product from the list.

I guess I'm really confused. I have a new PC that came
with SP1. SP1a says its the same as SP1 except for VM.
SP1a says it includes the fix I am looking for. The
article (817589) says the fix will be in SP2. The fix is
dated April 1, 2003. What gives?

FYI Just another option. I have the same problem, and similar frustration
trying to get this fix from MS or even getting through their website to find
a number to call. While hunting for information I came across messages from
others with the same problem who recommended trying DScaler
(http://www.dscaler.org/) instead of using the ATI MMC. I have been using
DScaler for a few weeks now, and have not locked up once..

The patch will be in SP2 (CPR - WinXP - Hotfix in SP2 ) It is dated April
1, 2003 because that's when Microsoft wrote it. You can either call them in
order to get it, or wait for SP2.
