View Full Version : XP Pro will not load

I shut down my computer over the weekend as I wasn't going
to be home. When I got back, it came up to the loading
screen and after a few seconds the scrolling bar freezes
and the computer is locked up. After cycling power it says
Windows failed to load and gives me 5 options:
safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known configuration
start windows normally
XP will go into safe mode, but I don't know what to look
for problem wise. This happens with every reboot out of
safe mode as well. Any thoughts?

Bring the machine up in safe mode.
Use msconfig (start->run->msconfig) to disable startup items including
non-MS services. Do not disable any MS services. With MSConfig that's easy
to determine. On the bottom of the services tab is an option to hide all MS
services. Check that then wait for the display to be regenerated. Virtually
anything on the startup tab is fair game to be disabled.
You may also need to go into device manager (start->run-devmgmt.msc) and
disable extraneous devices in case it's an errant device. Which brings up
the first thing you should try which is to disconnect any external
peripherals other than keyboard, mouse and display first to make sure one of
them isn't causing a problem.
