For historical reason my C: drive is only a 2gb partition. I have just added
more memory to the box totalling 1Gb. Automatically XP (pro) will then size
the pagefile to be 1.5Gb. Because I have other stuff on the drive that I
cannot move, I am running out of disk space on C:

I have therefore created a new pagefile.sys on drive G: (physically a
different drive to C and F)

However, the old pagefile.sys is still sitting on C: being 1.5 Gb big. I
want to free up this space, so can I go ahead and delete it, or how do I go
about it?
(In the Virtual Memory dialog box drive C: is now set as "No Paging File")

Operating system files are located on my F: drive

Simply delete the file. If it does not go away, try from the Safe
Mode.

Set C to have a notional size file - I suggest Initial 2 Max 50 That
will probably never come into existence, but if you don't have the
possibility, the system is inclined either to sulk and not have one
anywhere, or to go OTT - as with you

At 1GB RAM you should not in any case tie up 1.5GB of disk space at all
times. This idea that the file should be n times RAM is just plain
wrong. I suggest having a generous maximum, but set the initial size as
100 (and it probably will never grow unless you load an enormous amount)
