View Full Version : Word is Word is bad in XP ?

I have a new computer running XP. I have been 2 days now trying to get
either Word / Excel 97 or Word / Excel 2000 to run in XP. The 97 version
has so many little quirks I know it is not working right. When you go to
Format\Fonts for example, only the first letter of the font name will
display. Same with the size - select a 12 point and it w show '1'. This
is just an example.
The 2000 version opens and then shuts down with some long message about
sending a report to Microsoft.
Am I the only one w these problems? Solutions? If I was assured Office XP
Standard would work I would buy it but suspect the problem is deeper than
that.

Office2000 works fine with XP (Home), no problem at all.
For Office97 I don't know.

But don't forget the Service Packs

Works fine for me now too, but I had the same error with
office2k. Try completely uninstalling and word/office,
program you have and then reinstalling. worked for me.

Office 97 has three service packs out there. SP1 may or may not be
incorporated in the Office installation CD. I have one version that it is
installed and one that it is not installed (both 97 pro). The second two
are SP 2a and 2b. 2b is the only one you need to install AFTER SP1 has been
installed.
During the SP2b install it will ask for the Product ID. You can find this
information by clicking Help then About in Word. The Product Id is located
near the bottom of the window AND the SR will be located on the top line.
If SR-1 or SR-2 is not listed you will have to install SR-1 before SR-2
(SR=SP)

Some more info - maybe this is only a font problem - in Format\Fonts -
any font style I click on displays only the first letter of the font in the
box above the list of fonts - same with Style an Size - first digit only -
and when I click on a font - dialogue box says 'this font style name does
not exist - this is third uninstall / reinstall with same problem.
Also, can anyone tell me how I can get the program to open in the same
window size each time - opens too big for screen no matter how many times
i reduce it
Thank all -

Thanks Richard. If only if was so easy. I been there 3 times now in Office
97 and 4 times in Office 2000. Alll 'clean' installs too. (Full uninstall,
check C drive, purge Registry, uninstall [not disable] Norton AV and IS).
Nothing ever changes. Just noticed now I can't open Excel files from My
Docs. Must be in Excel to do it. Another quirk.
