Hardware Serial Numbers

Does Windows XP keep a file that records the serial
numbers of hardware attached to it? I am trying to find
the serial number of a mouse that was once attached to my
PC.

Oh?!?
Then how does XP ask for a re-authorization after you've reached a
certain number of hardware changes to your PC?

I may not keep mouse data but, but it certainly keeps NIC, HD, CPU and
other HW info somewhere.
