View Full Version : Why is XP so slow?

I have XP on a Gateway computer fairly recently. I have a
Celeron 2.1 gig processor. Everytime I try to do
something on the computer, it takes 2-5 seconds (some
times longer) to register. Very annoying, my wife wants
to sell the computer and use our old computer that had win
98 (registered programs much quicker). I've noticed that
there's a lot going on in the background, what needs to be
running for XP? Win 98 only need Explorer and Systray.
Desperate!!

How much RAM?
What Hard Disk?
XP is just as fast as any other MS OS, but as with all OS's, varying factors
can cause delays and slow downs

If you have the XP Hotfix Q811493 installed you should remove it. Go to
Control Panel->Add and Remove Programs and look for this hotfix. If present
remove it and reboot.

XP is slow simply because Microsoft had not rewritten WinNT, which was
developed especially for Networks and Servers. They saw "Virtual Memory"
prospect in WinNT before DOS (in Win98), but had not done a giant work to
rewrite all NT, but simply made makeup in appearance (especially in XP),
leaving all Networking services. Even you say NO in all
[Components]
and
[Networking]
InstallDefaultComponents=No
XP ignores these and installs all networking components, which are simply
junk for stand alone PC. Even you stop majority services, many network
options are installed and occupy and drain memory and resources (you may sue
Microsoft for this as it was made for IE integration to Win98).
Do not go back to DOS in Win98, but I also think to go back to Win2000 which
has less makeup, less annoying, and drain less PC resources, but has the
same "Virtual Memory" power.

What a complete load of cobblers !
Back to Win2000 ? What version of windows do you think
that is ? WinNT - that's what.
Before you start spouting crud, next time ask the OP more
questions to find out about their setup (like HD space,
RAM, 811493 loaded etc).

Yes, NT, w2k, XP are the same line, and have many common drivers, but each
next OS became more loaded with options for lazy and dummy.
To test OS I use old laptop P233, 96RAM, 3.2HDD with simultaneously
installed on different partitions XP-pro and w2k, both with Office2003.
Although w2k has the same problem with mandatory network components, w2k run
Office2003 programs faster. So, if you like annoying windows and pleasant
look use XP, but I prefer OS that run program faster, allowing normal work
even on old laptop.
