Very ironic! The update 817287 is to fix the problem of failing to install.
It is caused by a corrupt catroot2 file. To fix: Go to C:/windows/system32
and find the file 'catroot2' and rename it. (something like 'catold' or
anything of your choice). Reboot, download and install. A new 'catroot2'
file will be generated.

You have to admit that it is a bit humorous even though ironic is more
fitting! :o)

I have WIN XP pro. Every day or so, a message pops up from my system
tray that says there is a Windows update, if I want it. I accept it,
and the message goes away, without anything happening. A couple of
days later, it happens again (and again, and again...).

So I tried your fix. PROBLEM: I have no file by that name. I searched
Windows and all sub-directories for catroot*.* and came up empty.

Any ideas?

Apparently, since you get popup notices you are configured for auto update.
Try just clicking on 'windows update' and select manually. Also, if using
AOL go to Outlook express and do the update. AOL and WU don't get along.
Post back with results.
