View Full Version : System File Checker available in Home Ed?

I have tried to run System File Checker but it asks for
the XP Pro CD and if I insert my Home Ed CD it will not
accept it. Is SFC available in the Home Edition or is
Repair on the installation CD the only option?

Hi Jeff,
Is this a "restore" type CD? If so, just cancel that and point it to the
I386 folder on the hard drive, usually under C:\Windows.

No, the request was for the Installation CD. The dialog
box prompt read:
Windows File Protection
Files are required for Windows to run properly must be
copied to the DLL Cache.
Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 CD now.
Following the logic of your suggestion (?), I tried
changing directory to windows\system32\dllcache\ before
running SFC /scannow. After asking for the Prof CD
several times the request changed to the Home Edition CD
and the process appeared to run but it kept stopping and
requesting the HE CD so I kept hitting the retry button.
We seem to have cracked it! It was so easy in 98SE!
Ironically, XP is running fine on my PC. I was trying to
find out how to run SFC for a friend who is having
problems post MSblaster!
Many thanks
Jeff

If you have installed SP1, point to this location when running SFC
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles
The source files are available there.
without SP1, point to i386 folder in the CD

I have XP HE SP1 V5.1 Build 2600 and the sfc /scannow
works fine for me.I can't see a need to do a system file
check after cleaning out the LovSan(blaster) virus so
perhaps you could tell us what you are trying to do or
what your friends problem is and we could help. Good luck.

The Reverend XP
Re sfc problem - see my reply to Ramesh.
The LovSan reference was just a bit of a continuing saga.
My friend had/has(?) an intermitent hardware problem which
he thought was an XP problem. The company that supplied
his PC said it was due to one faulty memory DRAM and
changed it. He reinstalled XP (don't ask why!) and in
doing so lost his McAfee Online virus scanner and he
picked up LovSan when he re-downloaded it! After cleaning
out LovSan he was still having XP problems. It could not
find some files, etc. So I suggested running SFC and that
is when we discovered the SFC problem, which I duplicated
on my PC. He still has an intermitent problem and I
suspect it is the motherboard.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Ramesh
Thanks for your input.
I am running XP HE Ver 2002 SP1 (integrated SP1
Installation) so the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles folder is
not present. I have tried pointing to several directories
when running sfc /scannow.
Marginally the best is your suggestion of pointing to the
CD \i386 folder. I still receive the dialog prompt to
insert a 'Windows Professional SP1 CD' and have to
hit 'retry' up to dozen times before the process starts.
The process then stops every so often but by then is
requesting a HE SP1 CD. Each time I have to hit 'retry' to
continue. Amongst the HE SP1 CD requests it throws in a
few Pro SP1 CD requests!! The process runs to completion
so it is not a major problem now that I know how to handle
it but it is very strange behavior for a file checker.
Thanks for your help.
