Download manager problems

[Dumb blonde]

I'm trying to install some Windows Updates but thanks to
dropped connections the download process stops and forces
me to start all over again. I've tried 2 different
download managers, in order to be able to resume an
interupted connection, but could not get either to work.
I've tried all the tweaks and twiddles suggested by the
download manager help facilities and have now run out of
ideas. Can anyone help? I'm very new to all this.

If I understand (I've tried it) it correctly, MS download places do not
support d/l managers...
