I am a new user to XP and have inadvertently caused some
problems that I can't seem to fix to my satisfaction. I
was wondering if there is a way to return the OS to the
original configuration out of the box so I can start over.

In the Start Menu, go to Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools and
System Restore.

Select the option to "restore your computer to a previous date" and pick a
date when everything was working OK. This is actually better than wiping
the whole thing and going back to day 1, because you should only need to go
as far back as you have to.

That, of course, assumes you have not been building layer upon layer of
issues over some few months of time and can go back far enough. It also
assumes that just restorng back to an earlier point will get rid of all the
entries you have mad with installtion of programs over the months and if
some of those programs you are not considering a mistake. =)

If you want it truly "day 1", you will have to format and start again.
Colin's might get you there, but it might not. It certainly won't hurt to
try.

Backup your personal documents, photographs, images, spreadsheets, etc
FIRST!
