Updating windows XP

I know that there is an automatic update facility at
www.windowsupdate.com, but would like to know if there is
a way to download these updates, and save them to my hard
drive as .exe files.

The reason being my friend has recently bought win XP, but
has a 56k connection, and to download all of the updates
would take forever, so I would like to download them and
then burn a cd for him, so he doesnt need to download them.

At the Windows Update page, go to Customize on the left hand side and click
"Show Windows Update Catalog". Then go to the Catalog page and you can
download updates to be installed at a later date.

If you go to Windows Update (in Start - All Programs) and on the left
take Windows Update Catalog (you may need to enable that in the
'Personalise' item) then you can get to Updates for Operating systems -
for Windows XP (with or without SP1) and there select the critical
updates to be put in a download basket and then downloaded to where you
wish.

Also when you get an update in the regular way, the downloaded .exe goes
to Temp Internet files, and before finally installing you can copy it
away from there.

If the target system does not have SP1 though I would start with that -
either as the full Network download (130 MB) from
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp
or down at the bottom is the link to order it. on CD for $10 plus S&H
IIRC

Then go to http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;826939 and get
the consolidated security update pack - about a quarter down, 'Download
the 826939 package now). If you then add the 824146 consolidation for
IE you are probably pretty well up to date
