how do you get the chat log to work

Greetings Mickey,

Assuming you mean MSN Messenger 6.x, you can turn on the "chat log" by clicking the Tools
menu, then Options, then Messages tab, and checking the checkbox next to 'Automatically keep
a history of my conversations'. Alternatively, if this option isn't available, or you're
using an older Messenger version, you can use a third-party addition like Messenger Plus:
http://www.msgplus.net which will automatically log conversations into text files.
