Hi.. do not know which group to go with.. been looking
for days in all the QAFs.
I just installed the Windows XP Home Edition. The
problem that I am having is when my screen saver comes on
or when I start playing some games (downloaded from
Shockwave). As soon as I click on them, my monitor goes
off. (yes completly off). I have to reach up and turn it
on. And it does it also when I exit out of the games or
exit out of the screensaver. What can I do to fix the
problem?
Thank you
Mary

Control Panel> Power Options, check the timeout setting for your monitor.
Increase if the time is too short.

Display Properties> Screensaver. You have several choices to try here.
--Extend the idle time before the screensaver turns on.
-- Try one of the more simple screensavers: Flying Windows or Blank, for
example. Perhaps a simpler screensaver will interact better with your
monitor.
-- If no luck with a different screensaver, select disable the screensaver
altogether. Display> Screensaver> None. You still have your Power Options
settings taking care of the monitor when the idle time limit has been
reached.

You may also want to check the manufacturer's website for an updated
display driver for your adapter.

Am glad you have made some progress with this. Windows XP does not include
support OpenGL but many of the driver packages downloaded from the
manufacturer's will add that functionality. The 3D screensavers that
shipped with XP were rewritten so that they work... most of the time. Some
of the older screensavers and even some games use OpenGL. These would need
the drivers that also add the OpenGL features.

I don't know for sure that OpenGL (or shockwave or DirectX) is the cause of
your problem though. It's a possibility with the symptoms you've described
but it could also just mean that the display driver isn't keeping up with
the current demands being made upon it. In most cases, an updated driver
will work more efficiently. Bumping hardware acceleration down a notch may
give you some temporary relief if a new driver is not available for your
hardware.
