I want to connect a PS/2 compatible Microsoft IntelliMouse to an XP Home
laptop, thru the USB port, using a serial-to-USB adapter. Will the system
accept this arrangement? And will I need to d/l and install the Intellitype
software for the mouse? The laptop uses a touchpad currently and I don't
think I have the mouse software on the sys but suppose that XP has a driver
for it.

I have tried it but the cursor is erratically active - not dependable. The
mouse properties says "the device is working properly". . . but it doesn't
act that way on the screen in use.

Thanks for any ideas about this.

NO! The serial to USB adapter will not help you. Serial mice are limited.
You may be able to find a USB to PS/2 mouse adapter.

BTW: Depending on how old the mouse is, it may already be USB compatible.
Do it have a square green UBS to PS/2 adapter??
