View Full Version : At wits end - the Word is Word is bad in XP ?

Thanks for caring David - yes - i viewed the fonts and Tahoma is there -
acts the same as all the others - when you double click on it only a T is
displayed and dialogue box sez "this font sytle name does not exist."
I have stripped and reloaded this thing at least ten times. Tried all
suggestions. Excel is corrupted too. Will not open a file from My
Documents - only within the program. At my wits end.
Am ready to buy Office XP - but no reason in the world Office 2000 should
not work. And what if XP doesn't work?

Did you go to your fonts folder and try viewing Tahoma font to make sure the
font is ok. Type Fonts in help.

Very interesting David - followed your directions herein. Even remembered
del for delete. :) and entered 'del tahoma.ttf' and also tried 'del
tahomabd.ttf' and message was "access denied'. However, I was able to
delete some other fonts with no problem. For example, del trebuc.ttf
deleted with no problem. The tahoma fonts still show in Word.
Also, in Word\Format\font there are only 4 fonts listed beginning with a
'T', in dir /a
t*.* there are 18 fonts listed beginning with a 'T'. And some strange names
like
TT0952M_.TTF and TT9832L_.TTF. Besides this strange names note that the
ending
is in upper case as compared to tahoma.ttf.
Also, interesting, since I can't open Excel files from My Docs, I created
a new Excel file and named it Sam.xls. However, the file is now saved as
s.xls and still will not open from My Docs into Excel. But will open from
within Excel via File\Open\Excel\s.xls.
Both these programs are a disaster. And I just priced Office XP at @ $400
bucks with no guarantee it would work. Everyone says both Office 97 and
2000 should work in XP - I have made all the downloads and tried every
solution.
Seems bigger than a Tahoma font problem? Your thoughts? Suggestions?

If 97 and 2000 won't work then neither will XP. 95 might.
Fonts where the name ends with _ are fonts that when copied in the name =
already existed. To identify fonts type start fontfilename
start TT0952M_.TTF
which should start the font viewer on the file.
If a file is in use, rename it and reboot and you should be able to =
delete it.
ignore excel till word works.
