View Full Version : How to open Access MDB file on IE on WinXP?

Fie Fie Niles
February 2nd 04, 11:02 PM
In Windows 2000 or Windows ME, on IE, when I open Access .MDB file, it calls
up Access and open up the file.
In Windows XP, when I do the same thing, it does NOT call Access and the
file is not being opened.
It is not related with the IE version, because on Windows ME the IE version
is 5.50.4134.0100, on Windows 2000 the IE version is 6.0.2800.1106, on
Windows XP the IE version is 6.0.2600. So the IE version on Windows 2000 is
higher than the one on Windows XP, but the Windows XP has the problem, and
the Windows ME IE version is lower then the one on Windows XP, and the
Windows XP has the problem.

How can I open Access MDB file on IE on Windows XP? Thanks.

Presumably you DO have Access installed on the XP machine - (Hint - it does
NOT come as part of Windows)

Access needs to be installed into XP. Access is part of Office and does not
normally come with any Windows version.

Access was probably installed as an extra with the original setup. This
Office program is not a default component of the operating system. To
open/edit Access files in any version of Windows, you need to install
Access first.

Until you write back with letting us know whether you actually have Access
installed on your computer, and what versions you have install on XP, 2K, &
ME, I doubt you'll get any other answer other than what you got last week,
so either reply with more info, or stop posting your trolls. Thanks.

In that case the file association must be broken.
In Windows Explorer go to Tools-Folder Options-File Types.
Scroll down to MDB and edit the file to open with Access.

Or, because *.mdb files are one of the "unsafe" file types (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;291369&Product=ie600)
you may have to lower your security settings for the website in question.

Thanks. It is already set up like that.
When I go to Windows Explorer go to Tools-Folder Options-File Types and
scroll down to MDB file, under "Opens with" it already says "Microsoft
Access". Also, the in Windows Explorer, the file symbol is already Microsoft
Access symbol. When I double click on the MDB file in Windows Explorer,
Access opens right away without asking me what do you want to open the file
with.

I can't think for the life of me why you would want to open and MDB file
inside of IE. Access is the "container" program for MDB Files.

Why are you doing this?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

OK, I use Access 2002 & WinXP here at work, and it opens up an .mdb
file, both from the Address line & from file open, bringing up Access to
open it. I even tried to open an .mbd file that's on another computer
on our non-domain network, and it opens up the .mbd file in Access. I
know this doesn't really help you, but except to tell you it should
work.

I am not the one who wants to open MDB file inside IE. My client is the one
who wants to do that. Actually, the scenario is like this:
we have an .ASP page with a button, when the button is clicked, the client
wants MDB file to be launched. Since .ASP page is run in IE, the same be
behavior that happens in IE happens in the .ASP page.

This is the code to launch the MDB file from the .ASP page:
<script language="JavaScript">
window.open("\\myserver\Database\Test.mdb")
</script>

Thanks. Hmm...we tried it here on 2 XP machines, and from both XP machines,
it did not work, it did not bring up the .MDB file, but when we tried on a
non XP machine, it works fine. What version of IE are you using?

6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633

That should be all of the IE patches except the latest one, which I'm
about to test out to see if I should download it for all my computers at

Very unconventional use of ASP, IE, and Access ... while the client may
want to do this, perhaps you can suggest they do it differently. At
minimum, download the mdb file to the local disk and open from there.
If that not possible, then build an application which displays the data
as a "normal" web application would do.

Find a local expert in Access to show you why this is all
unconventional. Find a local expert on web applications to design and
propose something for you.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
