windows closes after 1-3 seconds

I installed XP Home upgrade form W98 about a week ago and after I click on something and get a new window, it closes before I can do anything. For instance, I go to "Control Panel" and click on "add/remove programs" and it opens and before I can read the
list of programs, it closes. Is there a setting I can change to stop this timing out or auto-closing???

You may have a virus or spyware infection. Download and run Ad-Aware 6.0
(www.lavasoftusa.com) and make sure you have the XP Firewall enabled
(Advanced Properties tab for your internet connection in Networking) and are
running an up-to-date anti-virus program. If you have problems keeping a
window open that you need to accomplish these things, try rebooting into
safe mode.
