Formatting a CD

I have several CD's that have data on them. I no longer
want that data. Can I write over what is on the CD or
must I format the CD befor recording new data?

If this is no CD-RW disc you cannot rewrite it and have to throw it
away. Data on CD-RW discs can be deleted and replaced by other data
some times until the disc can not be used anymore as well.
