My antivirus software says that my pc may have an
infected file in c:/recycler ( then loads of letters &
numbers).
I have tried to find the folder to delete the suspect
file, but cannot seem to be able to find it - any
suggestions ?

that is a hidden folder associated with the recyling bin. try emptying the
recycle bin and see if it goes away.

You may have to purge your System Restore points.
