View Full Version : Several Little Q's about XP

Tripper
February 3rd 04, 07:22 PM
Well I finally did it, upgraded to XP Home SP1. But I have a few Q's
about stuff that 98SE did I'd like to find how to do in XP also, so
here goes...

1) How do I see how many resources are being consumed on Startup? In
98SE "My Computer/Properties" would do it, how so in XP?

2) I use "StartupCPL" to control what's booting on Startup, how do I
see which processes load at Startup and switch them on/off in XP?

3) I've never liked MS's "Java Virtual Machine" and prefer to use
Sun's JRE Plugin. How do I get the default Java to JRE? Mere
installation didn't do it.

4) Can anyone explain to me why "Generic Host Services" wants to go
out on port 1900? I've blocked it, but what is port 1900?

I have many more but these are the ones bugging me the most, for now.
I'm running Athlon 2400+ on an nForce2 platform and 98SE just couldn't
handle it, eventually locking up or bluescreening with heavy use.

Any input will be much appreciated, so thanks all.

Hi, Tripper.

Now that you've retired Win98, you also need to retire your Win98 mindset.
;^} WinXP is not built on the MS-DOS platform like Win9x/ME, and many of
the old concepts just don't apply to it. As soon as you get used to it,
you'll like the new system.

> 1) How do I see how many resources are being consumed on Startup?

The NT platform doesn't allocate such "resources", so you can forget this
question. WinXP will use all your RAM in the most efficient way, rather
than pigeonhole some of it for only specific purposes. You can use Task
Manager to see some of the details that might interest you. Just press
Ctrl+Alt+Del or right-click on an unused spot on the Taskbar.

> 2) how do I
> see which processes load at Startup and switch them on/off in XP?

Click Start | Run and type msconfig.exe and press Enter. Spend some time
exploring this utility, which first appeared in WinME.

> 3) I've never liked MS's "Java Virtual Machine"

Sun won, so MS isn't allowed to bundle the JVM with Windows. Ask Google for
"java virtual machine", or see this web page:
Transitioning from the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine
http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/

and this one:
http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp

I don't know about your 4th point.

I seem to remember that msconfig began in Windows 98, not Millenium. It was
in the later as well, but I believe its first appearance was in Win98.

R.C.White answered the other questions.

Port 1900 is used by SSDP Services.
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm#SSDP_Discovery_Service

Don't install/use MSN Messenger (I'm not talking about XP's "Windows
Messenger" -- they aren't the same thing) and you can safely leave it blocked.

Windows 2000 was the one that didn't have it, I believe.
But you could use the one from ME in 2000

The name "System Resources" refers to a Windows 9X structure. It
doesn't exist in Windows XP. There's nothing to run out of. This
is one of XP's big advantages over 9X.

You can use the built-in msconfig, as you could before. I'm not
sure, but I think Startupcpl should work too.

Oh yeah, and one other thing...

How do I turn off the XP boot and "Welcome" screens on startup?
TweakUI did it in 98 but don't see that same option for XP. I prefer
to watch processes load or update and confirm IRQ placements instead
of "XP" and "Welcome". Thanks again everyone.

Thanks for the correction, Chris. I retired Win98 three years ago and never
used WinME, so my memory on that is fuzzy.

Guess what Tripper, there's a new function in XP called "Help & Support" -
it contains the answer's to all your "generalized" questions and more.

Again, lose your Windows 98 mindset.

Windows XP is a true plug and play system. It will load everything
correctly, unless you, the user, interferes because you think you know
better. IRQ assignment is automatic, and can not, in most cases, be changed
anyway!

You're a picky little snit eh? Gotta control EVERYTHING eh? Asking these

In 98 that referred to a specific 16 bit structure in system data that
was a bottleneck. It just does not exist in XP, and 'resources' when
used is used more naturally, depending on context.

>2) I use "StartupCPL" to control what's booting on Startup, how do I
>see which processes load at Startup and switch them on/off in XP?

Use a run of MSConfig and use its services page, clicking the Hide
Microsoft to see services from others like AV and so on. Beyond that
you can see which services are actually started at Control Panel - Admin
Tools - Services. But be cautious. Most services that have started are
running for a reason. The ones I think you could probably set to Manual
start on a stand alone
machine (or probably non-corporate LAN ) are

Background Intelligent transfer (though it is used by Auto Update,
manual update works fine without)
Routing and remote access
Both of which seem implicated in heavy usage of CPU

SSDP Discovery and
U PnP
provided you don't need it for a UPnP router

Alerter (which is *not* needed for error alerts on the local machine)

Indexing (unless the use of context in searches is an actual benefit)

IMAPI CD Burning (if third party CD burning is implemented)

Messenger (against the pop-up ads, though of course NetBIOS should be
blocked in a firewall, this is better than nothing - and is doing no
good in the sort of setups mentioned)

QoS RSVP (not that it causes the trouble that street wisdom suggests -
but it doesn't do anything positive)

>3) I've never liked MS's "Java Virtual Machine" and prefer to use

Sun put an applet in the Control Panel: its 'Browser' page allows you to
set it as the one to be used for either (or both) IE and Netscape

On the whole General Host process should be allowed to access the net -
in support of various services that might want net access like Auto
Update and Time sync. But not needed as a server. I don't recollect
specifically which is using 1900 (one of the many software 'ports'
supported by 'Windows Sockets' over the internet's TCP/IP protocol)

Start - Run MSConfig and on the Boot.ini page check /SOS

You will only see files loading though - there are no reports of IRQ
made
