I have a new computer and am running Windows XP. I'm
trying to move the "old" folders from the crashed
computer to XP, but only the A drive is working and there
isn't enough disk space to copy all the folders.
The "select folders" option isn't working. Any
suggestions as to how I can transfer the folders to the
new XP computer?

Hi, Peggy.

Can you - or a friend - open up the old and new computer cases and
physically move the old hard drive to the new computer? At least
temporarily? That's what I did for my uncle after lightning fried his old
computer's CPU and other parts but left the HD unscathed.

Once the physical swap has been done (check master/slave jumpers, cables,
etc.), boot WinXP from the new HD and go into Disk Management (from the Run
prompt, type: diskmgmt.msc). Assign a temporary drive letter (or letters)
to the old HD (call it X: or something that you will recognize as
non-permanent). Then use Copy or Xcopy.exe to move everything you want from
the old HD to the new. When finished, take the old HD out and go on your
merry way. :<)

In Uncle's case, since his old HD was 20 GB and the new one was 80, we just
copied the 6 GB or so of files actually on the old HD into a new \OldDrive
folder on the new HD. That gives him plenty of time to pick and choose
which old files he wants to keep; when finished, he can delete the \OldDrive
folder.
