keyboard settings

Have set up my new computer but I seem to have goofed when it comes to the keyboard settings. When I hit the backslash key I see Ã* instead of the backslash symbol. Also the singular quote key gives this è or È for the shifted quote key on t
he screen. I would really appreciate help because it also is stopping me from installing some programs.
